DA Mangaung notes with dismay the Speaker’s attempt to evade accountability
by Cllr Hardie Viviers – DA Mangaung Caucus leader 13 August 2021
The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes with dismay the attempt by the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) Speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, to evade accountability as he played a central role in not dealing with those implicated in the corruption and mismanagement in Mangaung over the past decade by resigning as Speaker of the Council on 11 August 2021.
The DA believes that it is very contemptuous towards the residents of Mangaung in the light of a DA motion of no confidence in the Speaker for his role in protecting instigators of mismanagement. The most prominent is his protégé, the ex-Municipal Manager, who was forced to resign after watertight complaint by the DA that led to disciplinary procedures against him. It is clear that the resigned Speaker for a very long time protected the resigned Municipal Manager, and now follows the footsteps of his protégés to evade accountability.
It is well known that Cllr. Mxolisi Siyonzana honors his own interests and has a very long relationship with Ace Magashule.
This decision of the Free State provincial interim leadership on their Mayoral Candidate will just further support the project of state capture that started under Ace Magashule, by giving one of the central figures that enabled the unbridled capture and collapse of Mangaung, the position of new mayor. More of the same is sure to come.
The announcement by the so called “cleansed” ANC interim leadership in the Free State that Cllr Siyonzana has been chosen as their Mayoral Candidate, just clearly illustrate again that they do not have the ability to make a clear break from the Ace Magashule faction and support the Ramaphosa faction within the ANC.
The DA will keep on fighting for the rights of our residents in MMM and to keep politicians and officials of the ANC in the MMM accountable for failing the residents of Mangaung, especially with providing the most basic of service delivery.
It remains the responsibility of the residents of Mangaung to bring real change and that can only be achieved by voting the DA into government in the Local Government Elections.
