After a speech by DA Ward Councillor, Tjaart van der Walt on the looming landfill crisis in Mangaung, a resident in Universitas decided to take action. They immediately started keeping their recycles products in a seperate container.

Whenever they visit the family close to Bainsvlei, they quickly drop off the recycling at a recycler.
Next up was graden waste. Instead of throwing away their organic waste like peels, grass etc. They bough a handy ad simple composter from Builders Warehouse, and started filling it with anything from newpapers to grass clippings.

The resident, Jaap, says that it is wonderful how fast the decomposition takes place that reduced the volume of the waste. They have been adding garden waste for months, and none of the 4 containers they bought are full yet. A normal household can easily survive with just one composter. Or they can evenjust make their own compost heap.
The advantage of the conposter is that there is no smell and it is visually much more appealing.

The family now only needs to put out one bag of non organic, non recyclable waste per week.
With less that 5 million cubic meters of airspace left in Mangaung, and no sign of preparations for a new landfill site, that will cost at least R100 million, Mangaung is in trouble if all residents don’t quickly learn to compost and recycle.
